Taking the Reigns on Your Health

Wendy J

Today I'm getting a little personal and want to talk about health. It is so important because it affects EVERYTHING. How you live, how well you sleep, how well your body functions, your skin, the list goes on. After being sick for so long, I think being healthy is the most important luxury of all time. For the past 5+ years I have dealing with health issues (autoimmune problems.) None of them are fun but to be honest it's been so long since I have felt like I am supposed to that I don't know any different. I've been to well over 20 different doctors and specialists, I've had countless vials of blood drawn, several ultrasounds, mammograms, MRI's.... the list goes on. While I have never asked why me, there are moments that I get mentally exhausted from it all. I let myself cry for 1 minute, then I pull up my big girl pants and get on with the day. Want to know something weird? It seems that I have trained my body to only cry for one minute tops about anything. IT'S SO BIZARRE!!!! No joke, the one minute mark hits and I get an overwhelming sense of calmness and I stop crying. This may happen in several increments depending on what I am crying about, but it doesn't ever last over a minute. Crazy right?!

Anyways, back to what I was talking about. There is ONE thing that kills me about my crappy health.... how it affects my family. Those who know me well know I am extremely stubborn. And that's putting it lightly. Ha! So I can deal with the war going on in my body. However, I don't take it well when my family is affected. My son especially worries. He's very analytical and can "see" things most people twice his age wouldn't notice. He knows when I'm having a bad day and will try to help out as much as possible. While it is sweet, I loathe that he feels he needs to help because mommy's body is failing her at the moment and he knows it. (Insert me sobbing here) My daughter on the other hand believes everything mommy tells her... for now. Ugh, I am not looking forward to her teen years when it is the exact opposite. But if I tell her mommy is fine she just needs a moment, she believes me unlike my son. Then there is my husband. He and I have become closer through all of this madness. However, I still catch glimpses of worry in his eyes and it bothers me to no end.

SO, how can one take the reigns on their health? What can you do when you feel like all is lost? Trust me, I've been there and still visit from time to time. These are some things I have found that have helped me. While they may seem simple, they can truly make a difference.

I don't practice yoga as often as I should, but I can tell a huge difference in how I feel when I am consistent with it. Find an activity that you enjoy and get your move on!

  • Get your body moving. Find something you enjoy doing and get after it for at least 30 minutes a day. Some people enjoy running, others like to lift, I myself am a huge yoga lover! It has made not only a huge difference in how well I feel but how well I sleep and how well I handle stress. Schedule it in your day and don't take no for an answer. Other options are to go on a walk, ride your bike, go for a hike, or join a club in your community of a sport you enjoy. If you have a hard time finding the motivation ask family or friends to join you. Make it something you look forward to each day. If you need a coach to help you get on the right track, check out Michelle by clicking here! She is AH-MAZING! You can even sign-up to get a one week FREE clean eating meal plan. Michelle also has challenge groups she runs. I have never been more inspired or felt more supported by a wonderful group of people!

  • Realize what your body is truly asking for and give your body what it needs. Most days my body hurts and needs movement. Other days I struggle with breathing and need to slow things down. Then there are days when my body says it has had enough and I do absolutely nothing but hold down the couch for the day. LISTEN to your body. It knows what it needs you to do. Ignoring it I have found only makes things worse.

Make sure you fuel your body with the good stuff. One of my favorite snacks is a bowl of fresh fruit! If I need a little extra sweetness I add 1/2 tsp. of raw honey and stir. So yummy!

  • Try to eat healthy and balanced meals. With the chaos that every day life brings, it can be very difficult to eat this way. However, as the saying goes, you are what you eat. Eat junk, you are going to feel like junk. Our bodies use what we put in it to not only fuel it, but support our systems and repair anything that needs some assistance. So what we feed it is extremely important! Something that was a huge game changer for me to make sure I stayed on track was meal planning and meal prep. Without them it is way too easy to derail and eat whatever is available. Dedicate one day a week where you have a few hours of time to make what you will eat for the week. It may seem like a hassle, but when it comes time to eat, the gloriousness of being able to pull something out of the fridge and warm it up is PRICELESS! Get your family, friends, or a partner involved to make it fun. There are a ton of ideas on Pinterest!

  • If you are struggling finding something that helps you, maybe look to more natural ways that will support your body. My body is a freak of nature. It doesn't behave. Since it does not like to cooperate with conventional methods or even me for that matter, I have had to try more holistic approaches. One of the many ways I have done this is through the use of essential oils. They have been wonderful in supporting the systems of my body. I am not saying to use essential oils instead of medicine by any means. Discuss with your doctor how you  might be able to incorporate holistic approaches into your lifestyle that will benefit you.

While I highly suggest sleeping in your bed and not outside, sometimes a nap in the fresh air is simply blissful! (as long as you are covered and have an alarm set that is)

  • Sleep 7-8 hours a night. This is also huge in making sure your body stays healthy. When we are at rest, our body is busy repairing itself. If we can't get in the necessary amount of sleep, our body just continues to get bogged down by all that it still needs to do. Have trouble sleeping at night? Try getting off any electronic device 30 minutes before you want to hit the hay. Instead read a book or magazine, write your to-do list for the next day, meditate, take a warm shower or bath. My mind has a hard time shutting off, so I always keep a notepad and pen on my nightstand. That way if an idea pops up I can write it down and don't dwell on whether or not I will forget it the next day.

  • Be your own advocate!!! While I still struggle with this one at times, it is important that you get your message across to your doctor(s). I have come away from an office feeling like I just beat my head against a wall and they didn't hear a word I said on more than one occasion. When that happens, I usually move on to a new doctor. It may take several doctors before you get to the right one. I still have yet to find a specific specialist that I feel comfortable with and that will take me seriously. But don't give up! If need be, take a short breather to clear your mind and go back in full force. Find something that works for you. Maybe try a holistic doctor or a D.O instead if you feel like you are getting nowhere. Get recommendations from friends. What is important is that you don't give up.
